Being a responsible beekeeper means doing your part to protect the bees that help feed the world. Bees are vital for pollination, which supports global food production. They also bring joy to hobbyists and income to professionals. But bees face serious threats—from pests and diseases to pollution and harmful chemicals. In New South Wales (NSW), if you keep European honey bees (Apis mellifera), you’re required to register your hives with the NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD). This helps track and manage outbreaks of dangerous pests like Varroa and tracheal mites.

Registration also allows authorities to contact beekeepers quickly if inspections or treatments are needed. Plus, registered beekeepers receive updates on biosecurity measures and access to training resources.

To register, visit the Biosecurity & Food Safety Portal. First-time users need to create a login, then click “Apply Now” to begin the process—it only takes about five minutes. Your application will be reviewed within 10 working days. Alternatively, you can fill out the PDF form and mail it with payment to the address provided.
